WORK WITH ME

Residencies &

Workshops

While I’ve dedicated countless hours in the percussion practice room and studio, I’ve realized the benefits of exploring rhythm in new ways extend to EVERYONE. My workshops are designed to cater to a wide range of skills and interests, ensuring that your entire department can gain from my residency.

TOPICS

  • Learn to sing rhythms in a musical and dynamic way utilizing the basics of the Carnatic (South Indian) rhythm system. We'll learn how to keep time in various meters, syllables for subdivisions and groupings of 3 through 7, and learn how to understand and feel mixed-meter and polyrhythms in a more musical, less mathematical way!

  • Using the music of the 20th and 21st Centuries as our starting point, we'll take a deeper dive into the Indian Rhythmic System to learn how to approach the music Ligeti, Xenakis, Stravinsky, Messaian, and more from a more intuitive, embodied rhythmic perspective.

  • Indian Classical Music has long had an influence and impact on Jazz in the West. In this workshop, we will learn how to groove freely in mixed meter, utilize Indian Classical Music rhythmic forms to improve our rhythmic vocabulary, and explore West-African polyrhythmic drumming patterns - the rhythmic DNA of American Jazz

“At the heart of my teaching is creativity. I’ve seen so many great players lose their way when they stop being creative. Whether that’s writing your own music, studying an area of music that’s new to you, or learning to improvise and create spontaneously, creativity is vital to practice.”

In this intensive, we will dive into learning the basics of this system, including time-keeping in odd meters, subdivisions of 3 through 7, and how to analyze and sing rhythmic phrases musically!
